Roughly sixty kilometers southwest of Paris lies the village of La Chéraille. Here, Keiko Nishida—a farmer’s florist, or a floral designer who sources her materials direct locally—lives on a large flower farm, using its flowers to create arrangements in a signature French natural style. She also shares her life in the French countryside via conventional and social media to eager audiences in Japan, where more and more people have gained an interest in living with flowers since the Covid-19 pandemic.

This page-a-day book presents one photo with accompanying text for every day of the year, chronicling the author’s lifestyle and ideas for using flowers à la France, where flowers are a natural part of everyday life. Farmer's florist Keiko Nishida was born in Osaka. In 1991 she moved to France, where she worked at a florist in Paris before settling down on a flower farm in the nearby village of La Chéraille in 2007. Today she designs wedding and other arrangements and teaches classes using flowers from the farm’s extensive grounds.

Toward the end of the nineteenth century, Japanese-style painting (nihonga) split into two factions, the traditionalist Old School (Kyuha) and the more innovation-oriented New School (Shinpa). One prominent member of the Old School was Ikegami Shuho (1874–1944), who was from Nagano Prefecture. Shuho was born in the same year as another Nagano artist, Hishida Shunso (1874–1911), who was a leading light of the New School; in many ways, then, the two personified the emergence and evolution of the two major streams of nihonga.

Published in conjunction with Shuho’s 150th anniversary, this collection looks back on his works and a range of related materials so as to cast light on the art of a master who was much more than a mere traditionalist.

‘Yoshitoshi Tsukioka: One Hundred Views of the Moon’

Yoshitoshi Tsukioka (1839-1892) was an ukiyo-e artist in the late Tokugawa and early Meiji periods. While specializing first and foremost in warrior pictures and historical depictions in the style of his master Kuniyoshi Utagawa, he was also active in other genres, including bijin-ga portraits of beautiful women, and caricature.

‘One Hundred Aspects of the Moon’ represents the final stage of his career that Yoshitoshi had arrived at in 1885, at the age of 46, and that he continued working on until his death at age 53 in 1892. As the title suggests, the series comprises a total of one hundred items, telling all sorts of stories related to the moon in one way or another. The broad range of characters appearing in these varied stories includes women in the Heian period, generals in the Sengoku period, and common people in the Edo period, also ghosts and other mythical creatures.

This book introduces all of the “One Hundred Aspects of the Moon,” divided into the four topical categories “beautiful women,” “mythical and divine creatures,” “brave men” and “taste, pathos and nostalgia.”

🇫🇷Japanese artist Susumu Shingu was born in 1937 in Osaka. After graduating in painting from the Tokyo University of the Arts, he went to study for six years in Italy, where his interests shifted from painting to sculptures to kinetic works. He has since been active creating works powered by wind, water, and other natural forces for sites around the world. He is also known for his picture books and original stage works.

His solo show is now on view at the Marais Space through Sep 07 in Paris. Plus, an exceptional selection of his works and a monumental mobile sculpture are exhibited at the OGATA Paris through May 31.

'Children’s Advertising in the Showa Era Vol. 2'

This collection brings together advertisements found in children's magazines published during 1970-1974. Displaying teenage idols on the cover and featuring serial comics by popular comic artists both entertained young readers and helped them to mature. But mass consumption has resulted in the loss of most of these magazines along with the advertisements they contained.

In order to produce this series for the enjoyment of 21st century readers, digital technology was employed to reproduce the advertisements in their original coloring from the old magazines.
